Metallica plays 21st Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert
Five new covers and one never before played live rare gem! Metallica
surprised fans at the all acoustic performance at Neil Young’s 21st
Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert with this very different and
surprising set list. However it was the children and parents for whom
the Bridge School Benefit is put on in the first place take the CENTER
stage - literally. They sat behind the bands, and their presence
reminds everyone that these performances, these unique acoustic
performances, wring out something special.
Both night’s
performances began with Metallica opening with late '60s/early '70s
Mowtown act Rare Earth's 'I Just Want To Celebrate', they continued
with the covers as they went into Nazareth's 'Please Don't Judas Me',
and on the first night with good (and surprising) spin on Garbage's
'Only Happy When It Rains' which was replaced with Blue Oyster Cult’s
‘Veteran Of Psychic Wars’. |

Fans began to wonder if it was going to be an all cover tune set when they followed up Garbage’s
tune with Dire Straight’s ‘Brother in Arms’ but at it’s conclusion,
James announced that they might then just cover some Metallica tunes.
And that they did with an awesome and very different arrangement of
‘Disposable Heroes’. “What the guys did to 'Disposable Heroes' was
absolutely marvelous, taking it's brooding menace and re-framing it
with a dirty, muddy-booted, peet-infested scent, keeping it's power and
strength whilst giving it new, jaunty celtic life. And the re-working
of 'All Within My Hands' proved just how rich and versatile the
'...Anger' era material was, Trujillo and Hammett up and off their
feet, 'electrified' if you will by the energy of the moment.” - SW! Editor Steffan.
The first night’s final two songs, Bob Seger's 'Turn The Page' and
'Nothing Else Matters', and the second night’s, ‘Unforgiven’ and
‘Nothing Else Matters’, all tried and trusted acoustic favorites, true
crowd pleaser's and both were delivered to tumultuous applause. Fitting
closers for a stirring event, Metallica opened up their acoustic wings
perhaps wider than ever, taking a few gambles and finding a winning
formula.
